Here’s a food-safe, edible version of a cooking oil solidifier — great if you're making something like a homemade vegan butter, spread, or just want a clean way to store or reuse oil later.
Ingredients (makes about 1 cup):
1 cup cooking oil (olive oil, canola, avocado, or a blend)
1 tablespoon unflavored gelatin (or agar-agar for vegan)
1/4 cup water
Optional: pinch of salt or herbs for flavor
📌 Note: Gelatin gives a firmer texture, agar sets a bit faster and is vegan.
Bloom the Gelatin or Agar-Agar
In a small bowl, mix 1 tbsp gelatin or agar with 1/4 cup of water.
Let sit for 5–10 minutes to absorb water (this is called "blooming").
Heat the Oil
Warm your oil gently in a pan (not boiling — just warm enough to mix easily).
Mix It All Together
Add the bloomed gelatin (or agar) to the oil while stirring continuously.
Keep it on low heat for a minute or two until everything is fully dissolved and blended.
Pour & Set
Pour the mixture into a mold, ramekin, or container.
Let it cool, then refrigerate for 2+ hours until fully solid.
Done!
Use like a spread or store for later use.
It’ll stay firm in the fridge and soften at room temp.
Use coconut oil for a naturally firmer texture.
Add a little vinegar and mustard powder for a mayo-style spread.
Infuse herbs or garlic for flavor before mixing in the gelatin.
